What Does An Acupressure Mat Actually Do?

Many people that have used acupressure mat think it is safe to say that it is the best decision they made. However, they are not remotely the same as Yoga mats and cannot be used as such. These mats supposedly help one to relieve stress, pain, and tension. It is much like acupressure, only in the form of a mat.

Acupressure Mat Benefits

Standing on foot acupressure mat for at least 10 minutes barefoot without any movement of feet is recommended in starting. That should be increased to 30–45 minutes over some time. Also, 2 minutes of standing bare feet on the tip of acupressure are good enough. It will do wonders for you.

These foot acupressure mats claim to stimulate the right acupressure points. Still, I would not know how they know how to make a mat suitable for you since customization is unavailable according to your needs.

There are simple mats that give a suitable surface to help stimulate points, somewhat randomly. Still, it can help get circulation into your plantar fascia (the “pillow“ between the bones and muscles of your feet and the floor) and stimulate movement between the 27 little bones of your foot that have to work together. You could also lay on them or stimulate different parts of your body, depending on how creative you are. Still, it’s going to be hard to get specific in terms of reflexology points and particular protocols. The one below provides a little more information, but since everybody is different. You are still working with a “close enough“ or “best guess“ scenario in terms of getting to specific points, but sometimes you need to stir things up a bit.

Then there is the Shakti mat, made of a lot of little points, and used to stimulate the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. I know some people who swear by it and say they sleep well if they lay on it for 10 minutes before bed, but it does take some getting used to.

Things To Keep In Mind

I think a cheap acupressure mat is not right, expensive is not good as well. It has the best money- value reason to buy. It has a good bag for storage, and overall works great. But you choose what is valuable for you.

Also, Acupressure mats are not Yoga mats and cannot work for that purpose. However, they are an excellent supplement to yoga. I would use it before or after doing yoga. Possibly even during ‘Shivasana’ because acupressure increases circulation, it is always good for the body. Experiment with it and try it out. The important part is that it needs to be done barefoot without socks and every day for a more extended period. Contrary to popular belief, you are allowed to break out of the norm. You can experiment with anything that feels good for you during your yoga practice.

They are not going to replace the skilled work of acupressure experts and reflexologists, but since most people don’t see one of them every day, I think it can be an essential part of one’s daily health care routine.
